"Former Jubilee Allstar Barry McCormack released his debut solo album We Drank Our Tears in May 2003, to much critical acclaim. An album of songs inspired by the Irish folk tradition- utilising only guitar, voice and harmonica- Hot Press called it ‘the finest acoustic album of 2003…timeless and placeless, but at the same time very specifically observed and honestly rendered, universal, local music’ "

Former Jubilee Allstar Barry McCormack released his debut solo album “We Drank Our Tears” in May of this year, to much critical acclaim. Hot Press called it “The finest acoustic album of 2003” and described it as “a melting pot of Brendan Behan, Bob Dylan and Shane McGowan… an album of contemporary folk songs, rooted in a tradition that goes back generations”. Barry also featured on RTE’s “Other Voices, Songs From a Room” television show and the accompanying compilation album from the series, Barry was also part of the much raved about Lisdoonvarna festival held in the RDS this summer.

The Jubilee Allstars were once described as “a mixture of Leonard Cohen, Velvet Underground and Brendan Behan” (Tony Clayton-Lea in Cara Magazine Jan-Feb 2001). As a singer-songwriter and guitarist Barry contributed to the two seven-inch singles, three E.P.s and two studio albums the band released between 1996 and 2000. After the release of their critically acclaimed album “Lights of the City” Barry left the band in order to pursue a solo career.

“We Drank Our Tears” was recorded in April 2002 by Barry’s brother Niall (also a member of Jubilee Allstars). It’s the first release on Hag’s Head, Barry’s own label.

Barry, accompanied by just an acoustic guitar and a harmonica, We Drank Our Tears is very much a folk record. The songs of the Irish folk tradition are cited as a major influence by Barry, and the song “On a May Morning” was inspired by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem’s “As I Roved Out”. Perhaps the greatest influence on “We Drank Our Tears” is that of Bob Dylan, and Barry argues that, for anyone wishing to write songs in a the storytelling tradition it’s an influence that is impossible to ignore.

Dublins answer to the Kelly Family hit the stage in Whelans for one night only, according to the posters anyway, on Monday the 9th of August. These lo fi country popsters should have a single out in the very near future on the ultra cool American label 'All City's' on georgeous 7" vinyl so look out for that one. Support on the night comes from John Hegarty (one time keyboard player with Female Hercules) and the quietly wonderful David Kitt and his rhythm box.

June 5 199x
Jubilee Allstars, Dublins amazing family singing sensation, play a home game this week in Whelans on Wexford Street with support coming from another Dublin outfit Joan Of Arse. It should be quite a busy night for Lee the drummer who will be playing with both bands on the night, I hope it doesn't get too confusing for him and he manages to remember which band he is playing with. Anyone who say them with Smog recently is sure to know just how entertaining these guys can be on stage. Their new album should be out in the coming months as will be the new release from the mighty Joan and her Arse.
