March 16 2006 The Frames are announced for
Lollapalooza 2006,
Chicago: Aug 4-6.
Lollapalooza 3-Day Pass It’s the festival that changed live music. Lollapalooza is in Chicago for one huge 3-day event, in the city’s jewel of a green space, Grant Park. It’s 3 days, 8 stages, more than 130 bands, and limitless spectacle that will change your life.
Grant Park, our gracious host in Chicago, will once again give us the beautiful green space to play in 2006. This year, we've expanded the grounds by 100% to fit eight stages inside. What does that mean? It means more bands, attractions, and spectacle for you. But make sure you have the physical conditioning to walk the park and not miss a thing. Start training now by bagging your own groceries, taking two stairs at a time, and doing butt clinches in your cubicle. |
February 2006 Hot Press report: "While the next Frames album is still a long way off, Glen Hansard has confirmed that he’s a collaborative solo project, The Swell Season, in the can. You can get a sneak preview by hopping on a plane and catching Glen’s
March 19 show at Pianos in New York.
Support is provided by his – chortle – Czech mate Markéta Irglov.
Meanwhile, 15 years after The Commitments, Hansard is playing the lead role in a low-budget Irish film about a busker.
“He meets this East European girl, and she inspires him to get off his ass and to get into the studio and make a record and go see his girlfriend in London…to get her back with these songs that he's been writing,” Glen reveals. “The script is really good, I'm very happy with it.”
Even more interestingly, Glen is writing the accompanying soundtrack with Damien Rice.
“We’ve taken the guitars out and (I’ve said), ‘Right, here's the scene where I'm playing this song for the first time on the street. This girl walks by and she hears it. What kind of song is it? Where are we? Okay, what have we got?’
“One of us starts playing some chords and we kind of take it from there. It’s been really organic, really simple. What he has to offer and what I have to offer are two very different things, and when they combine they seem to work well.”"
November 2005 The Frames play: Dec.19 - The Music Factory, Carlow Dec.20 - Ulster Hall, Belfast Dec.31 - INEC, Killarney, Co. Kerry Also check out their KEXP Radio Session from September 4 2005.
September 2005 Review from recent ACL Festival in the USA: "I have seen the Frames a couple of times before in small clubs and always thought that this stirring Irish band would be something to see at a festival. Under the blazing sunshine, they proved me right with one of the best sets of the day in front of a crowd at the AMD Stage whose enthusiasm grew throughout the band's show. Singer Glen Hansard (who some may remember as the guitar player in the movie The Commitments) happily contrasted the show with a club gig the Frames played in Austin a couple of years ago that drew fewer than twenty people, and the crowd didn't let him down when he asked them to sing along." May 2005 The Frames have just finished some US touring which included a great gig at the Sasquatch Festival, Seattle. The boys performance caused quite a stir - they had a request from the main stage to turn down the volume and Canadian band Arcade Fire were in the audience looking on - the Cnucks have been Frames' fans for awhile now. The band are heading to Germany next week for the start of more European dates before nipping back to the US to play some festivals before returning to Ireland for their Oxegen date on Saturday 9th July.
May 2005 Hot Press: "Glen Hansard to release limited edition live CD
The Frames frontman and pipe-playing Duihnan release a limited number of live CDs next week
Frames fans will have to be quick off the mark on May 5 when 1,000 CD copies of Glen Hansard’s collaboration with celebrated piper and whistle player Eoin Duihnan go on sale at www.duigo.com
Recorded live in 2003 at McCarthy’s Bar in Dingle, the 15-minute-long ‘Cochina’s Tribe’ features an improvised vocal from Glen who dedicated the performance to Duihnan’s daughter, Triona.

March 2 2005 "Dance The Devil" was voted No.8 in Hot Press People's Choice Top 100 Irish albums of all-time. Jimi, hotpress.com: "In many ways The Frames embody the independent spirit of Irish music; they are local heroes, experimental, visceral and driven. Whether it be ‘Pavement Tune’ or sweet lilting Americana ballads like ‘Star Star’, they can and do embody a range of musical emotions that make them both accessible and provocative. The sheer love and loyalty they command from people prove just how important a band they are. They may not be the biggest band to emerge from this island but they have produced great album after great album, and more than any other Irish band they personify a free-wheeling spirit linked with a sensibility for creating beautiful, powerful and emotive music." "Set List" was voted No.12 Diane Hayes, hotpress.com: "Setlist captures the brilliance that is The Frames live. It is almost a live ‘best of’ of their previous three albums. Hearing their music live is a whole other experience. There is always a fantastic atmosphere at Frames gigs and you get a sense of this listening to Setlist – the rocking music, refrains of other songs snuck in, the crowd singing along and cheering, and Glen’s stories. The next best thing to being there." "For The Birds" was voted No.15 Philip Rooney, hotpress.com:
"For The Birds is an album that evokes so many emotions. From the opening instrumental track ‘In The Deep Shade’ to the hidden track at the end, it’s a real musical roller coaster. While it may not be as instantly accessible as some of their other albums, For The Birds is the work of musicians who have realised that they have the ability – and the belief in their abilities – to make this kind of record all on their own. Magnificent."
Ken Ward, hotpress.com:
"For The Birds showed just how dynamic Irish music can truly be. Blending traditional instrumentation with a very stripped bare approach to recording the album, The Frames tapped into a vacant space in Irish musical culture. The album is at once anthemic and personal, outwardly angry, and delivered with such a sense of intimacy, thanks to the unmatched compositions of Glen Hansard and the production of Craig Ward and Dave Odlum." "Fitzcarraldo" was voted No.21 Joe Heron, hotpress.com: "The Frames continue to make some really good tunes, but this remains their most solid album. Songs like ‘Revelate’ and ‘Fitzcarraldo’ became classics, others like ‘Angel At My Table’, ‘Monument’ and ‘Red Chord’ remain favourites with fans. More than their debut, this was the album that really gave people a basis on which to rally round the band. If you don’t like fanatical Frames fans – blame Fitzcarraldo!"

December 2004 RTÉ News: "The Frames are to play a concert in Dublin on New Year's Eve.
The band will play Vicar Street on 31 December with tickets, priced €33, on sale on Saturday 11 December at 9am.
The Frames will also play the Olympia Theatre on Monday 20, Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 December.
The band's new album, 'Burn the Maps', will be released in the US in February."
December 2004 the onion: "BEST ALBUMS OF 2005 (SO FAR)
It was easy to view 2004 as a down year for music, with few classics everyone could agree on and fewer career bests from established favourites. But January and
February 2005 are already looking remarkable: Low returns Jan. 25 with The Great Destroyer, a surprisingly upbeat and frequently remarkable set produced by David Fridmann, while Clem Snide's End Of Love (out Feb. 22) takes on topics like death, religion, and the darker side of love in the unstoppable likes of "Jews For Jesus Blues." Best of all, The Frames' Burn The Maps (out Feb. 8, though it's available as an import) offers an epic, moody, bruising collection of songs about disillusionment, dissolution, and disappointment—all prime fodder for what may well prove to be 2005's best, and certainly most heart-rending, album."
December 9 2004 In 2005, Visit Ireland and Fall in Love with GOLDFISH MEMORY Coming Exclusively to DVD on January 18, 2005
2-Disc Set Includes 18-Track Soundtrack Featuring 3 Songs by Damien Rice
SAN JOSE, CA —Wolfe is excited to introduce Liz Gill’s Irish omnisexual romantic comedy GOLDFISH MEMORY to home video as a 2-disc set, including the feature film on DVD and a CD soundtrack featuring Irish rock and pop artists, such as Damien Rice. This popular festival hit, which won the Audience Award for Best Feature at Los Angeles’s Outfest, takes a sweet look at the love lives of a group of young Dubliners.
Written and directed by Liz Gill, who previously assisted Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes, GOLDFISH MEMORY is a light-hearted look at the dangers and delights of dating in contemporary Dublin. When Clara sees her boyfriend Tom kissing Isolde, it sets off a chain reaction of romances and heartbreaks until the entire cycle has turned full circle, each character trying to solve the pressing question of what is the perfect relationship. Some favor marriage, others a week-at-a-time arrangement. The only thing they can all agree on is that love is the one thing we can’t live without. Falling in love, out of love and making the same mistakes all over again - all of us say we learn from heartbreak, but how many of us really change? And do we want to? Exploring the comical nature of love, straight, gay and in-between, GOLDFISH MEMORY brings life to the saying what goes around, comes around...and around...and around...
The DVD edition of GOLDFISH MEMORY will be accompanied by an 18-track soundtrack on CD. The film features songs by Bossa Nova impresario Antonio Carlos Jobim, best known for the song “The Girl From Ipanema.” For the film, producers enlisted Ireland’s up-and-coming rock and pop artists to cover Jobim’s songs. The soundtrack is led by 2004 Shortlist Music Award winner Damien Rice, who, along with Lisa Hannigan, covers the songs “Waters of March,” “Desafinado,” and “Once I Loved.” In addition, Rice’s single “Cold Water” is used throughout the film as a theme for the character of Angie. The soundtrack also includes 5 songs by The Walls, and songs by The Frames, NPB, Messiah J & the Expert, Sinead Lohan, Nina Hynes and Rodrigo y Gabriela.

September 1 2004 Hot Press: "Days before the release of their fifth studio album Burn The Maps, The Frames reveal that album number six is "ready to rock".
The Frames, who release their fifth studio album, Burn The Maps, in Ireland on September 17, are already hard at work on Maps’ follow-up, which may see the light of day as early as next year.
The reason for such admirable workaholism is that Burn The Maps is the band’s first worldwide release, and promoting it is unlikely to leave the band much free time to record.
The other reason is, as Frames manager Claire Leadbitter posted on the band’s website, "because there are soooo many new songs flying around at the moment".
Frames frontman Glen Hansard tells Hot Press a little something about what fans can expect.
"Our next record will be very much song-written," he says. "I can think of three songs off the top of my head that are very much in the tradition of proper, folky songs.
"One of them is called ‘Song For Someone’. It’s a very simple little song: a real, proper folky number.
"There’s ’People Get Ready’, which is simple too, but which kind of turns into a bit of a marauder at the end. It gets a bit (makes growly marauding noise) ‘Oooooaaahhh!'.
"And I think ‘Races’ is going to go on it, as well, this other song, which is very, very plain. You know. A one-guy-and-his-girlfriend-and-a-guitar kind of song.
"But you never know. You always go into an album going, ‘This’ll be what it is’. And it ends up being a completely different beast. But, yeah, as happy as we are with Burn The Maps, and as proud of it as we are, I’m already focused completely on our next record.
"We’re in the studio in October," he continues. "We finish the Irish tour, and we go straight to France to Black Box Studios. Graham Hopkins is going to come over and drum on it. We’re gonna spend 10 days there. And I’m really hoping that we’ll come out of that with another finished record. As in, it’ll be recorded fast. And it’ll be put out fast.
"The band are all already going, ‘Okay, which song? What version should we go for? What should we be trying to do with it? So we’ve an album pretty much ready to rock.""
August 30 2004 Hot Press: "From Marlay Park to Meeting House Square - The Frames have just been confirmed for this weekend's Hard Working Class Heroes event.
