Heyday: The Mic Christopher Story!

September 2021

Dublin Vinyl release: "On September 21st 2021, it will be twenty years since Mic Christopher celebrated his last birthday with us. He rang in that birthday onstage at the Lobby Bar in Cork. This live album features an entire Mic gig and is a unique opportunity for people to feel what it was like to see him play.

Heyday is getting one million plays a year on Spotify alone and the vast majority of people who listen to his music never got to see him play.

There are no less than five previously unreleased Mic songs on this album which is a huge treat for the many listeners who adore his 'Skylarkin' album. They are Opera Song, Sassy, Wide Open Room, Doin' Better and When We Caught The Moon. Glen Hansard is a special guest for the encores of the gig. The encores include songs by Bob Dylan and Michelle Shocked which Mic and Glen played together in their busking days."

The Frames, The Mary Janes and friends will all perform in November.

"The 10th anniversary of Mic Christopher's death is approaching and to mark the sad occasion, a few of his old friends are getting together at Vicar Street. The Frames and The Mary Janes have just announced that they will put on a fundraiser at Vicar Street on November 29, raising money for The Fragile X Society of Ireland.

Neither a Frames nor Mary Janes gig, the night will see those on stage play MJ and Mic Christopher solo songs as well as relevant covers, to celebrate the life and great music of their dearly departed friend. Tickets are priced at €26.00 (including booking fees) and go on sale Friday October 7 at 9am. They will be available from and Ticketmaster outlets nationwide."

The Frames newsletter: "The Frames together with our friends, The Mary Janes -
would like to announce that we will be having a Mic Christopher night
in vicar street on November 29th.

It's just mad to think that this year will be the 10th anniversary of Mic's death. we want to mark it. we want to sing his songs. we want to gather together with friends and
remember. to be really honest with you, I don't know precisely how it is going to work on the night, but I'm sure it will all come together in proper order. it will not be a frames gig as such, or a Mary Janes gig - but both bands will effectively be backing various singers
(glen included) who will sing either Mic solo songs, or MJ's songs or relevant cover songs, or indeed, anything that springs to mind in connection to our friend...

Hope that makes sense and is enough of a description to whet your appetite!! all proceeds from this gig are going to be given to the Irish fragile x society, so your support will be doubly, triply and more-so appreciated. tickets will go on sale on Friday, 7th Oct at 9am from Ticketmaster, E26

"Skylarkin" was voted No.14 in Hot Press People's Choice Top 100 Irish albums of all-time.

Elaine O’Connell,
"Skylarkin’ can bring you up even when you’re having the worst of days. His outlook on life shames you into seeing things more positively. His untimely death only adds to the poignancy and insightfulness of the album, and strengthens its message – that we should appreciate what’s important in life and live each day to it’s full. This album gives perspective in a mad world and has been a shining beacon of positivity and hope in a sea of depressing, subjective and introverted music currently awash in the Irish music scene."

Karen McKay,
"Skylarkin’ is one of those albums that is deep, thoughtful and passionate without being moody and depressing."

Mic Christopher's "Heyday" is featured in the new Guinness advertisement, to be re-released on January 23.

Hot Press: "12 Dec 2003 - The late Dubliner's musical legacy lives on in the latest Guinness commercial, with 'Heyday' set to be re-released in January.

Mic Christopher's 'Heyday' single is to be re-released on January 23 as a result of it soundtracking the latest Guinness TV and cinema commercial.

Says a Christopher family spokesperson: "People who weren't aware of Mic before are seeing it and going, 'That's great, where can I get the song?' Once they've heard the whole of 'Heyday', we're hoping they'll check out his Skylarkin' album which is still available."

The music for the €1.5 million Ireland-only Quarrel campaign was sourced by ex-Fat Lady Sings man Nick Kelly who's now gainfully employed by the Irish International advertising agency.

"We're delighted with the soundtrack on Quarrel," enthuses Guinness Marketing Controller Mark Ody. "It's a beautiful and uplifting song and suits the ad perfectly."

Filmed on location in Dublin, Clare and New York, the 60 second advert was directed by James Brown and stars Irish actor Michael Fassbender.

Mic Christopher passed away on November 29, 2001 after sustaining a head injury whilst on tour in Holland.

We'll have more on the 'Heyday' re-release and Mic's musical legacy in the first Hot Press of 2004, due in the shops on January 15."

Another packed Whelan's. Another Hansard solo gig. Another Mic Christopher support slot.

"Support on the night was provided by the interesting Barry McCormack, who confronted a pissed-up Friday night crowd well, and Mic Christopher, who didn't. The latter's demands for complete silence were rightly met with derision; if Mic remembers his days with the Mary Janes - he'll know the songs should speak for themselves." -
